How Do You Calculate the Required Transformer Size?
Step 1: Total Load Power
Add up the rated power (in kW) of all connected equipment to get the total load.
Step 2: Determine the Power Factor (PF)
Typical power factors:
Industrial: 0.8
Commercial: 0.85
Residential: 0.9 or higher
Step 3: Use the Calculation Formula
Formula:Transformer Size (kVA) = Total Load (kW) ÷ Power Factor (PF)
Example:
If total load is 80kW and PF is 0.85:80 ÷ 0.85 ≈ 94.1 kVA
You may round up to a standard 100kVA unit.
Step 4: Consider Future Load Margin
It’s wise to add 10–20% extra capacity to handle expansions or load spikes.
