What Is a Transformer and How Does It Work?

A transformer is an essential electrical device that transfers electrical energy between circuits through electromagnetic induction. It is widely used in power transmission and distribution systems to step up or step down voltage levels, ensuring efficient energy transfer over long distances.

How Does a Transformer Work?

A transformer operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It consists of two main coils: the primary winding and the secondary winding, wrapped around a magnetic core. When an alternating current (AC) flows through the primary coil, it creates a magnetic field that induces a voltage in the secondary coil. Depending on the number of turns in each coil, the voltage can be increased (step-up transformer) or decreased (step-down transformer).

Applications of Transformers

  • Power transmission and distribution

  • Industrial machinery and equipment

  • Home appliances and electronics

Understanding the role of transformers is crucial for ensuring efficient power usage and minimizing energy loss in electrical systems.
